The Humane Society Of The United States.
Most people have a perception of the humane society of the united states as being an organization that has many animals which are waiting for people to adopt. While the part of the HSUS’s work is to support the local animal shelters, the work it does encompasses more than that. Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty is the motto of the organization and represents the complex work that is carried out by the organization.
There are thousands of animal species in the world. The main objective of the HSUS is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. HSUS does not only work in the U.S but has extended globally with some of its missions being to rescue sea animals. Racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research are some of the activities that rescued animals have been involved in. The activities that the animals are involved are many and these are some of them.
It is the work of HSUS to work with pet owners in ensuring their safety and security and also providing the support to the other local animal shelters HSUS has been a leading organization in lobbying for laws related to animals both locally and internally. The laws that the organization has been lobbying are meant to ensure that animal cruelty has been eliminated. Animals are also victims when a disaster such as when the Tsunami hit the South East Asia in 2004. In such scenarios the HSUS is always ready to travel in the area to help in the rescue mission of the animals. HSU also has a program of educating backyard owners of how to coexist with backyard animals such as the squirrels, mice, and raccoons.
The Humane Society of the United States was not the first to be involved in the work of helping animals. The first organization to be founded was the society for the prevention of cruelty of animals and was founded in 1886. It was the first organization of its kind in the U.S. More other organizations came up. In 1887, delegates from these organizations agreed to collapse and form the American Humane Association. In 1954 however, there was rift between members and some of those split formed what is now known as HSUS.
The main aim of HSUS is to eradicate animal cruelty worldwide. Among the first pieces of legislation was the one to fight against mistreatment of animals used for research. Due to the campaign which have been carried out by the organization, the U.S government has passed legislation that are meant to protect animals. The various laws includes those that are against mistreatment of animals to those that protect the endangered species, learn more here.
